Ridership up on The Bus
Officials with Merced County's bus system (The Bus) report that there has been a dramatic rise in ridership.
High gas prices are adding to the ridership. Transportation officials report that use of The Bus was up more than 17 percent in the final three months of the 2007-2008 fiscal year.
Overall, the ridership is up more than 9 percent. The numbers show that there were more than 100,000 boardings during the just-completed fiscal year than during the year before.
Here are numbers to call for various services:
Fixed Bus Routes ..... 725-3813 Dial-A-Ride .......... 384-3111 Car-less Commute ..... 385-7600

High-speed rail still an issue
Legislators continue to labor over language for November high-speed rail ballot issue.
Tha multi-billion-dollar high-speed rail bond is still in need of some changes if it is expected to pass the California voter test in November. Media reports indicate that state lawmakers failed to reach a compromise on the language of the bill, despite the fact that all sides involved agree more oversight is necessary.
As it stands, the measure emphasizes that the first route for construction should be from Los Angeles to Fresno and from Merced to San Francisco. Some believe including routes to Sacramento and San Diego into the running for first-round funding could broaden the scope of votes come election time.

Police off icials say that 47-year-old Xang Lee is believed to have killed himself after killing his 17-year-old stepdaughter, Eileen Her, a student at Golden Valley High School, and shooting his estranged wife.
Police received a call from Neng Moua who said her estranged husband had broken into her home on Serrano Street and was trying to kill her.
Moua said Lee tried to get her to ingest some type of powder but she was able to spit it out before running to safety. She is now hospitalized in critical condition.

Longer bridges opened on Highway 140
With Governor Schwarzenegger on hand, CalTrans opened the new, longer temporary bridges around the Ferguson Rockslide area on Highway 140 between Mariposa and Yosemite National Park.
Although the original "temporary" bridges did get traffic flowing again, the way they were configured (sharp turns at each end) meant that longer tourbusses and long safety vehicles could not use the bridges.
The new "temporary" bridges will restore normal traffic in and out of the park, easing problems for tour providers and suppliers to the park.
Longterm plans are in the works for a permanent fix.

More info on Guard killed at Atwater Penitentiary
Officials at the Atwater Federal Penitentiary confirm that a 22-year-old guard was stabbed to death by two inmates; now more information is emerging.
Preliminary autopsy results show that the victim, Jose Rivera of Chowchilla, was attacked by two inmates who used what the prison calls "homemade weapons" and was stabbed through the heart.
Few other details have been released.
Rivera was taken to Merced Mercy Medical Center where he died about an hour after being taken into the emergency room.
According to the Merced Sun-Star, the penitentiary has been the site of several incidents in recent years involving attacks, one well-publicized on where a guard was indicted for using excessive force on a shackled inmate.
The facility was opened in 2001.

Air carrier chosen for Merced
The federal government has reached its decision as to which air carrier will serve Merced Municipal Airport.
Merced has been without commercial airline service since the end of last month. But flights in and out of the city will resume no later than September 8th, under an order from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Officials there have chosen Great Lakes Aviation to replace Air Midwest and provide service to Merced and Visalia. Airport officials say Great Lakes will start with flights to Ontario International Airport in Southern California but will eventually fly to McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas.
Both Merced and Visalia will have two nonstop round-trip flights per day with 19-seat turboprop planes, with help from a federal subsidy of three-million-dollars a year.
Meanwhile, Vision Airlines says it intends to go ahead with plans to start service Castle Airport with flights to North Las Vegas and Reno.

County announces preliminary budget
The Merced County Board of Supervisors has put its stamp on a proposed budget for the 2008-2009 fiscal year.
The budget, pegged at more than $470 million, must be tweaked in the coming months and a final version presented in August -- hopefully for passage at that time.
The proposed budget recommends the expenditure of more than $46 million for public safety. This is an 8.6 percent increase over last year. Public safety is the largest single element of the county budget.
One major problem is trying to read signals coming from Sacramento about the state budget and what funding may or may not be available at the county level.
